(EN) The Saints’ Measure

Exhibition/happening: Installation, sound piece, painting

 At The Practice (Intendente, Lisbon), therapy, mental health and workshop centre.

Three first weeks of June, 2026; first weekend (06/06 and 07/06) opening / open days.

The “medidas dos santos” were ribbons cut the same length as a saint, left with the thousands of children abandoned anonymously in the Santa Casa de Misericórdia almshouse, between the 17th and 19th century.

During the month of LGBTQIA+ Pride, the centre will transform into a gender and sexuality “safe space”, for immersion/reflection, heralded by the “gateway”, an archway/passage of coloured streamers on which are written the intimate stories of “saints”, people who were important for the participants in the piece, people who helped, who shared, who still touch our souls. At the same time, on an as-yet unconfirmed schedule, a soundpiece will loop, where participants share the same stories in their own voice.

Participation

Participants think of a figure that helped, and in some way “saved” them, in their process of self-acceptance and affirmation as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community. Then they write up to 30 words in the form of a “eulogy” about this person, in their mother tongue or another preferred language. It can be written as a short anecdote, a poem, haiku, random words, perhaps even pictograms (no drawings please).

You may know the person intimately, it may be an iconic public figure, or even imagined, someone who only exists in our fantasies. The person does not have to be identified by name. 

Then your composition is shared with the artist, who will then handwrite your words on one side of a coloured cellophane streamer, one per participant. Also, if possible, the height of that person will be shared, which will correspond in this case with the “saint’s measure”. If this information proves impossible to ascertain, then the streamer will be the height of the artist, 1m75cm.

Finally, participants will record — it could be on their phone — the same eulogy in their own voice, which they will then send to the artist, even via Whatsapp. Once all the recordings are sent, a soundpiece will be created to be broadcast in a constant loop, within The Practice space, at times still to be scheduled. During the opening/open days, the piece will constantly be playing.

No The Practice (Intendente, Lisboa), centro de terapias, saúde mental e workshops.

Três primeiras semanas de junho, 2026; primeiro fim-de-semana (06/06 e 07/06) inauguração, dias de visitação pública.

As “medidas dos santos” eram fitas com o comprimento de um(a) santo(a), entregues com as milhares de crianças abandonadas anoninamente na Santa Casa de Misericórdia, entre os sécs.XVII e XIX.

A instalação, e peça de som, com participação pública

Durante o mês de Orgulho LGBTQIA+, o centro vai transformar-se ainda mais num “espaço seguro” de género e de sexualidades, e de imersão/reflexão, anunciado pelo “portal”, uma arco/passagem de fitas coloridas inscritas com as histórias íntimas de “santes”, pessoas importantes para os/as autores/as, que ajudaram, que aconselharm, que mexem connosco. Ao mesmo tempo, em intervalos ainda por determinar, uma peça de som vai passar em loop, com as mesmas histórias contadas nas vozes dos participantes. 

A participação

Os participantes pensam numa figura que apoiou, ou de certa forma “salvou”-nos, no decorrer do nosso próprio processo de auto-aceitação e afirmação como elemento da comunidade LGBTQIA+. Depois escrevem até 30 palavras, na forma de um “elogio” sobre essa pessoa, na sua língua de preferência/materna. Pode ser construído como uma curta história linear, um poema, um haiku, palavras soltas, ou até pictogramas (mas não desenhos).

A pessoa pode ser de conhecimento íntimo, ou uma figura pública, até imaginada, que só existe na nossa cabeça. Não é obrigatório identificar a pessoa por nome 

Depois esta informação é transmitida ao artista, que seguidamente vai transcrever as mesmas palavras num dos lados de uma fita colorida em papel celofane, uma fita por cada participante. Também, se possivel, vai comunicar a altura dessa pessoa, o que vai ser, neste caso, a “medida de sante”. Se esta informação não se disponibilizará, a fita vai corresponder à medida do artista, ou seja, de 1m75cm.

Em último lugar, participantes vão gravar – até no próprio telefone - o mesmo elogio na sua própria voz, depois enviados para o artista, até por Whatsapp. Com todos as gravações, criar-se-á uma peça de som que vai ser emitida em loop, dentro do espaço do The Practice, em alturas ainda por determinar. Durante a inauguração/dias públicos, a peça de som vai estar a passar constantemente.
